Cover Considerations *Ice* by Sarah Beth Durst

Okay so I own the galley edition of Ice by Sarah Durst but just today I noticed the officially published hardcover on the shelf. And it is gorgeous. I will now try to describe to you how amazing this book looks.

The picture posted here doesn't do the book justice because there are all these details you can't quite make out. Most exciting is the metallic sheen, very soft not gaudy, that is happening. The colours are perfect; baby teal and light purple, soft baby white and a hint of plum. The girl's hair is a rust red and it really draws your attention, aided by the red blush in her cheeks.

But the polar bear is my favourite part. His fur has so much shag and movement. His eyes are tender and there are the smallest white sworls around the bottom of his nose to say that there's something magical going on with this bear. His eyes are rimmed with a baby purple and it makes him look vulnerable and heartfelt. I actually feel his connection to the girl.

The background is layered with snowflakes and larger swirlings, soft snowy smudges. The whole design looks cold and plush at the same time. The title is in silver and it stands out in a subtle way as the only silver used for the design. This is one of the best teen bookcovers I've ever seen.

Cliff Nielsen is the illustrator and he's done other bookcovers such as the Cassandra Clare Mortal Instruments trilogy, which I can totally see, now. He's also provided artwork for the Bloody Jack series, The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint, he's done the new paperback editions of The Chronicles of Narnia, the Margaret Peterson Haddix series, the cover for Blood and Chocolate. Covers for both Star Trek and Star Wars books, and even a Harlequin Intrigue cover. What a cool guy.
The cover for Ice and the Mortal Instruments books actually radiate softly. Ice is even subtler, just adding a hint of sparkle. Lovely.

Wow it sounds beautiful. You are so right. Often a picture of the cover just does not do the actual cover justice.

I completely agree about the cover. My copy came in the mail a few days ago and I can't stop drooling over it. I should probably stop obsessing and open it! =)

Agree with you completely on the artwork. All very striking (the ones you've mentioned), and the sort that I'll ALWAYS pick up in a bookstore, no matter what. You know?

Wow, that is a beautiful cover and now I'm wondering about the book itself.

Love the cover -- the book is equally as awesome.

And now that you've mentioned it, I totally see the similarities between it and The Mortal Instruments.
